Magic The Gathering Battlegrounds: Xbox 3D Game And Cheats

Fans of the wildly popular collectible card game known as Magic the Gathering may want to keep an eye on Xbox games at their local retailers and bargain bins. Back in November of 2003, the video game developer Secret Level released an Xbox game called Magic the Gathering Battlegrounds. Featuring many popular and iconic figures from the Magic the Gathering universe such as Akroma the Angel of Wrath and Arcanis the Omnipotent, the game shoots to appeal to players of the Magic the Gathering card game. However, in an interesting turn, Secret Level changed the gameplay style in its digital homage to the card game entirely. What was originally a cerebral, thought-based activity turned into a twitch reaction-based 3D game focusing on tactical decision making.

Magic the Gathering the card game involves players constructing decks of magic spells from five different colors: white, blue, green, red, and black. The game is very strategic, inviting players to ponder over the hands they have randomly drawn and debating how to outmaneuver and defeat their opponent. The concept is simple in execution, but difficult to master. Magic the Gathering Battlegrounds takes the basic idea of two powerful "wizards" battling each other with powerful summoned creatures and sorceries, but abandons the slower pace of the card game. It instead opts for a fast-paced action 3D game, with tactical decisions still being an important aspect of the gameplay.

Magic the Gathering Battlegrounds begins with players loading the game up on their Xbox and choosing an iconic Magic the Gathering figure to act as their avatar in tech world of the game. After that, the two opponents are placed on opposite ends of a battlefield, and from there the war begins. Players open spellbooks, frantically summoning creatures, casting enchantments to further empower their creatures, and destroying enemy creatures and players with sorceries. Victory is achieved when one of the Magic the Gathering duelists deals enough damage to his opponent via sorceries and creature attacks to reduce his life to zero. The game's AI fails to provide much challenge, however, Magic the Gathering Battlegrounds offers a 2 player mode that is also available over the online service Xbox Live.

Like many video games, Magic the Gathering Battlegrounds has a variety of cheats for the player to help him along or unlock new content. The cheats range from unlocking new duelists such as Mishra, to making all the game's quests and levels available from the beginning. These cheats can easily be found online at websites such as ign.com or  gamefaqs.com.

Magic the Gathering Battlegrounds is generally considered a fun game to play with friends, and entertaining for a quick 15 minutes of fun. Most players can find it in a bargain bin at a local video game retailer for about $5. If there is a gripe with this little 3D game, it is that the interface can be clunky and sometimes make accessing spells difficult, and that it is not necessarily a wholly faithful digitization of the Magic the Gathering card game. However, if a player is looking for a more action-based version of Magic the Gathering, this Xbox game could be just what he or she is looking for.
